117 mins – France 2022 – Subtitles – Dir: Claire Denis Starring: Juliette Binoche, Vincent Lindon and Grégoire Colin Claire Denis has always been known for her unflinching ability to expose the human condition through film. Both Sides of the Blade is no exception, in which she casts her lens on the fragile magic of relationships and romance. Jean and Sara’s relationship is passionate, supportive and seemingly unshakeable, until the arrival of Francois, Jean’s old friend and Sara’s old lover, back into their lives. Rekindled feelings and insecurities soon haunt the couple as Denis expertly captures the destructive force of infatuation and selfish impulse. Released last year, Both Sides of the Blade earned Denis, aged 76, the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlin International Film Festival. BOTH SIDES OF THE BLADE is screening as part of the Reframing Ageing: The Cinema of Older Women season. “Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon deliver the dramatic goods in French master Claire Denis' nuanced exploration of married life.” Little White Lies

Reframing Ageing: The Cinema of Older Women  “Getting older, colour does me good.” - Agnes Varda to The Gentlewoman, 2018 With a burst of ingénue female filmmakers in recent years, the work of older female filmmakers, who were trailblazers in their day, should not be overlooked.
