The annual Spirit of Mother Jones Festival takes place in and around Shandon in late July each year. In 2023, our 12th festival will run over three days from Thursday 27th July until Saturday 29th July.

It is named in honour of American social justice and labour activist Mother Jones who was born in the area in 1837.

The festival is free and open to all and includes talks, documentaries, music, singing, walks, dance and discussions on topics connected to trade unions, social justice and human rights issues as well as history and heritage events.

The Spirit of Mother Jones festival celebrates the inspirational spirit of Cork woman Mary Harris, who went on to become known around the world as Mother Jones. In 2012 we erected a plaque to her on John Redmond Street in Shandon.

For the 2023 Festival and summer school we have organised over 20 events which will take place at the Shandon Maldron Hotel, the Dance Cork Firkin Theatre and on the streets of Shandon, the historic heart of Cork City. All events including music are open to all thanks to the support of Cork City Council, a number of trade unions and the Cathedral Credit Union. Just be on time for the events!

A full schedule of events can be seen on our website www.motherjonescork.com and on Facebook from mid June onwards. We urge people to check regularly as the timing of some events can change depending on the availability of speakers.
