Tips on how to make your beach break as sustainable as possible..
Cork’s is home to Ireland’s best beaches, but don’t just take our word for it – with 27 Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards in 2025 it leads the way with pristine sands, excellent water quality and sustainable environmental management.
The latest
ocean sustainability facts and stats highlight the importance of
responsible seaside tourism. For example, plastic waste increases during the
summer months when visits peak but marine litter, from trawlers and other ocean-going
vessels, washes ashore regularly too. Along with unsustainable development, these
man-made problems, threaten marine life, wildlife on land, and biodiversity.
Visit lesser-known beaches
Visiting alternative spots can make a difference to how sustainable your trip is because overtourism (an excessive influx of tourists) leads to an unsustainable demand on the environment, infrastructure and locals – including potential damage to coastal and marine destinations.
By visiting lesser-known beaches, you put less pressure on
busy ones, reducing the footfall and actually spreading the positive effect
that tourism can have to a wider range of locations.
Lesser known but equally beautiful beaches, like Blind Strand in Courtmacsherry, Scairt beach on Bere Island, Ballyrisode beach near Goleen, and Garnish beach on the Beara Peninsula are just some quieter alternatives of
many.

One of the best ways to spread the benefits of sustainable
tourism is to support local businesses. Eat local, seasonal produce, including
responsibly-sourced fish, and rely on operators who prioritise the environment
when planning your activities.
With such a vast coastline Cork has lots of On The Water options with
everything from surfing, kayaking, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), whale
and dolphin-watching, with trusted local providers. Many of Cork’s beaches now
have mobile saunas too – perfect for the sometimes-testing temperatures of the wild
Atlantic!

Always aim to leave your spot on the beach the way you found
it. Take your rubbish home (to make sure bins don’t overflow on busy days), avoid
collecting shells, rocks or other items, and stick to marked paths where
available. But to go one step further on your seaside adventure, why not leave
the beaches better than you found them?
The ‘Two Minute Beach Clean Up’ is a fantastic way to help keep our beaches clean
and tidy whether you’ve spent the whole day there or are just out for a seaside
stroll.
