Established in 1901, The White Horse is one of Cork’s oldest public houses, run for many years by Mamie Murphy, the sister of Commandant Leo Murphy, one of the founders of the 3rd Battalion.
In 2009 Joe and Maura Carey took over The White Horse and it continues to be one of Cork’s finest establishments serving locally produced, high-quality food daily and a range of beers, stouts, spirits and wines. Upstairs at The White Horse is one of Ireland’s most intimate music venues. The White Horse is also home to The White Horse Guitar Club and The White Horse Brewing Club.
Upstairs at The White Horse is an intimate, folk-club venue where many a magical night has taken place. International artists Martha & Lucy Wainwright, Dirk Powell, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott and Eddi Reader have all played in this enchanting venue as well as a host of Irish artists including Paul Brady, Iarla O’Lionaird, HamsandwicH, Damien Dempsey, Cathy Davey, Mick Flannery, Declan O’Rourke, Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill.
Owner Joe Carey has been passionate about music all his life. A member of the Cork based band Jodavino and one of the founding members of The White Horse Guitar Club he has been dedicated to bringing some of the world’s finest musicians and songwriters to the cosy and intimate surroundings of Upstairs at The White Horse. The venue also regularly hosts other arts events and the popular Smarter Egg events.
