Sustainable Tourism Case Study: Barnahown House

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Barnahown is a boutique guesthouse in Mitchelstown, situated in a mid-1800s farmhouse originally built by the local Kingston family. The property underwent a sensitive restoration by Galtee artisans to showcase its original construction. Owned by Ciara O'Brien, who transitioned from a 20-year corporate career to hospitality, the guesthouse is located in Mitchelstown's Georgian Quarter at the heart of the Golden Vale. Barnahown operates as a sustainably-run business, focusing on high-end hospitality and the "hidden gems" of the Galtee and Ballyhoura regions.

ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES

  • Biodiversity: Over the past two years, Barnahown has planted wildlife-friendly hedging around its 1-acre perimeter and dedicated one-third of the site to wildflower meadows, now a benchmark for Ballyhoura Development.
  • Resource Efficiency: The restoration included the installation of reduced-water-use sanitary ware and LED lighting throughout.
  • Waste Reduction: The property has eliminated single-use plastics and reduced its waste and recycling output to the equivalent of a single-person household through on-site composting and the reuse of cardboard.
  • Operational Advocacy: All staff are trained in Leave No Trace principles and advocate for the protection of the local ecology with all visitors.

SOCIAL INITIATIVES

Barnahown is deeply integrated into its community, offering a "30km breakfast" that exclusively features producers from the Mitchelstown area. All guest information, photography, and art were created by local makers to encourage guests to support the regional creative economy.

The guesthouse focuses on inclusive hospitality as a Travel Proud certified destination and opened a new wing in March 2026 featuring best-in-class accessible design. This social focus extends to the guest experience, where the owner Ciara utilizes her hiking expertise to guide visitors toward the innovative food and beverage producers within the Golden Vale.

GOVERNANCE INITIATIVES

The property utilizes a three-layer governance model where management, staff, and suppliers are required to meet specific operational standards. These standards are measured across six core pillars of sustainability and service excellence.

ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY

Barnahown serves as an innovation lab for the local hospitality sector, utilizing a not-for-profit pop-up model to support emerging culinary talent. This mentoring and trial initiative has directly resulted in the creation of three new local businesses in the past two years.

Furthermore, the property collaborates with Once Loved Once Worn to provide a platform for pre-loved fashion, retaining economic prosperity within Mitchelstown and supporting the circular economy.
